Each year, over 1,000 animal shelters across the country join forces with NBCUniversal in a nation-wide effort to “Clear the Shelters.” For one day only, all adoption fees are waived in hopes of finding each and every homeless pet a forever home. Morris Animal Refuge joins this nation-wide team of animal advocates each year as we waive all adoption fees. The day is a whirlwind of excitement as adopters come from far and wide ready to welcome a furry family member into their home with open arms. This year, Morris Animal Refuge’s 2019 Clear the Shelters was an extra special day.
Several long-term residents including shy kitty Snow, beautiful gal Ethel, and strong man Brian found homes, as well as bonded pair Honey and Kit Kit, gorgeous German Shepard Alexia, and senior guy Bear! By the end of the day, 35 animals in total found their new homes - a record number of adoptions for any single day here at Morris Animal Refuge! On top of that, only a handful of furry friends remained in our care at the end of the day, a few of whom were adopted the following day!
One story in particular stole our hearts and the hearts of our supporters nation-wide! Teddy, a deaf 1 year old Catahoula Leopard Dog came to us all the way from Georgia in January as a puppy. It became clear that Teddy needed slow introductions as he adjusted to all of the new people and things around him. Our staff worked tirelessly to give Teddy confidence and let him learn to interact with his world without any hearing. Shortly before Clear the Shelters, New York Magazine and HuffPost contributor, journalist, and influencer, Yashar Ali saw Teddy’s story and shared it on Twitter. After tons of retweets and national support, Teddy finally found his perfect family, with a daughter who is also Deaf. Teddy’s adopters are excited to teach him sign language and welcome him into their home and family! Congratulations Teddy!
And the celebration doesn’t stop there! As Teddy’s adoption story was shared time and time again, donations started coming in to support Morris Animal Refuge and all of our adoptable furr babies. Thank you to all of our supporters for collectively donating $1,018 during Clear the Shelters. Donations came from Pennsylvania, Ohio, California, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Indiana, Illinois, Virginia, and more! Thank you to all of our donors, adopters, volunteers, staff, online community, national community, Philadelphia community, Yashar Ali, and Teddy’s amazing new family! It takes a team to save lives and we are endlessly grateful for all the support. Congratulations to all of our animals and families who found their perfect match during Clear the Shelters this year!
